Google Starts Android Developer Contest

Google Google's success of the android platform will for a big part be hanging on the support for great applications. To stimulate development of these, the search giant initiated a competition.

Google has reserved € 6 million to reward Android developers that create usable applications for the Android platform. The prize money will be split into two rewards which have their own schedule. The first prize will be for the deadline of the third of March. The second part will be for a second contest that will start this summer as the first Android devices hit the mobile market.

During the competitions, multiple prizes will be awarded as the prize money is split into parts of € 165,000. This clearly shows that Google is not just looking for a killer app, but anything that works well and is original to the device. Extra points are rewarded to developers that try to use the GPS, accelerometer and always-on networking options of the device.

The deadline for the first competition has a clear reason. Apple has announced to open up the iPhone platform around that time. Apple's iPhone could be one of the biggest competitors to Google's Android platform. Other platforms in the market are RIM's Blackberry, Nokia's Symbian S60, SonyEricsson and Motorola's UIQ Symbian and Microsoft's Windows Mobile.
