UK Consumers Love Mobile Gaming

GfkIt seems mobile gaming is getting hotter in the UK as mobile gaming sales are staging up higher than ringtones in the according to research company GfK M2.

GfK M2 has tracked mobile content sales from March 2006 until March 2007 and noticed a spend of 83 million pound on mobile gaming, while the ever popular ringtone didn’t make more than 76 million pound in turnover. Other forms of mobile content fell even further back.

To back the story up with some statistics, 90% of the sales originated from operators and the top 10 selling games swallowed one third of the total revenue. The top 3 titles even took 60% of that.

"A year ago there was less activity in the mobile gaming market as well as poor phone functionality, limited game offerings and perceived high prices," said GfK M2 business group director Aaron Rattue. "In the last year mobile gaming has really taken off and now leads the mobile content market in terms of the amount of money consumers are spending. Clearly, gamers are happy to pay to download, with half of all the games downloaded to a mobile phone in the last year costing GBP 5 or more."
