Mobile Gaming Gear: “The Sleeve”

Wednesday, 28 March 2007

Ever since the Nintendo Wii, gaming and exercise seem to be a hot item. The mobile phone seems not to escape this hype as we got tipped about a story on Forum Nokia about controlling mobile games using muscle activity. This might give mobile gaming a whole new experience.

The project they discuss is called “The Sleeve” which is… indeed a sleeve. It’s made of skin tight material. The sleeve has build in electrodes that measure EMG signals coming from your muscles and communicates the readings to the mobile phone via Bluetooth.

To make The Sleeve available to a mobile gaming experience, the software on the mobile phone (in this case a S60 3rd edition Nokia) sees it as a joystick and allows programming of custom commands to it. This way, software doesn’t need to be optimized for use.

Next to games, this technology also can benefit medical science. It allows disabled persons to better communicate with hardware like a mobile phone, but also to track progress in rehabilitation programs.

Within the blog at Forum Nokia, they even proceed beyond mobile games as they also describe a way to use The Sleeve in combination with a Nokia 5500 (which has 3D accelerometers on board) for PC gaming with force feedback. Excellent reading material!
